John Albert McCABE, 73, founder of the annual McCabe-Hoss Picnic died at 3:40 p. m. Friday, Aug 5, 1960 in Culver Hospital. Mr. McCabe had a saddle horse farm SW of Crawfordsville for the last 30 years. The Hoss Picnic, attracting competitors from a wide area was conducted each year on or near his birthday. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Athens & Bainbridge Saddle Clubs. A Native of Putnam Co, he was born Sept 25, 1886 to John B. and Julia Hannafin McCabe. He was married to Nell Flannagan who died in 1944. he attended Putnam Co. schools and Purdue. Surviving 3 brothers; Frank; James; Harry; two sisters, Miss Marguerite McCabe and Mrs. Lucille Schlatter, an uncle and two aunts. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at St. Bernard's with Rev. Henry Ward celebrant of the mass. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. A rosary was recited at Bright Funeral Home Sunday evening.
